First settled by Irish and German immigrants, Eastpointe was originally founded as Erin Township. It remained a township until October of 1897 when the Halfway Post Office–aptly named for being the halfway point of the stage coach route between downtown Detroit and Mount Clemens–was established. It was incorporated into Halfway Village at that time and later reincorporated into the city of East Detroit. In 1992, to avoid being confused with its larger neighbor Detroit, East Detroit became the City of Eastpointe.
Home to many summer festivals and events, including the Erin-Halfway Days Living History Festival, Eastpointe is comprised of 5.1 square miles and approximately 34,077 residents. Sharing boarders with Detroit, Harper Woods, Warren, Roseville and St. Clair Shores, Eastpointe proudly boasts itself as being the “Gateway to Macomb County.”
