Michigan Military Technical & Historical Society is proud to present “Michigan Responds to the Cold War” a presentation by Dan Heaton.
Fighter jets on alert, anti-aircraft missiles in neighborhoods and soldiers mustering up for war at a 100-year-old fort in Detroit. Those are some of the images from the presentation. A series of surface-to-air missiles, now mostly forgotten, once dotted the map around Detroit to protect the city’s industrial from possible attach. When the Cold War turned hot in Korea, the last segregated unit of the Michigan National Guard was mobilized for the final time. Heaton’s presentation features plenty of historic photos and now-forgotten tidbits of a four-decade long stare down between the world’s two superpowers.
